Free nutritious lunch, textbooks and one teacher per 50-60 students are provided to rural schools by the Government of India . However, each child must purchase his or her own pencils, erasers, sharpeners, notebooks, and school uniforms. The $10-50/year worth of materials that the families are required to come up with on their own can become prohibitively expensive on a family's $60-100/month total earnings. That's why I decided to help.
Things that we think of as standard school supplies in the U.S. are luxuries in rural Northern India. Markers, crayons, watercolors, elmer's glue, rulers, pencil boxes, and scissors make a world of difference in the educational experience of these children. In 2009 I provided these basic school and art supplies to the 55 students of the Dhaderian K-5 Model School in the hope that little things can make a big difference.
